SUNOTEC Germany and SEAC Group Launch Strategic Battery Energy Storage Programme with up to 230 MWh in Germany
[Munich, Germany – January 2025] – SUNOTEC Germany has been commissioned by the SEAC Group to deliver the first construction phase of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) programme in Germany, marking the starting point of a broader, multi-phase storage initiative with a planned total capacity of up to 230 MWh.
The awarded project represents the first of four planned construction phases, to be implemented in stages in line with project milestones, market conditions, and regulatory and grid-related requirements. The overall programme is designed to significantly enhance the flexibility of renewable energy generation, improve resilience against volatile market and grid conditions, and contribute meaningfully to grid stabilisation and congestion relief.
Following the first confirmed 20 MWh construction phase, additional project stages are currently in preparation:
Second construction phase – 20 MWh, with internal approval in place and contract amendment expected, targeted for award in Q1 2026
Third construction phase – 30 MWh, with positive internal approval, pending grid connection agreement and final evaluation, targeted for award in Q2 2026
Fourth construction phase – up to 160 MWh, currently under assessment and subject to the outcome of grid feasibility studies
The full rollout of the storage programme is planned for completion by 2028, subject to successful technical, regulatory, and market evaluations.
Battery Storage as a Key Enabler of Germany's Energy Transition
Battery energy storage systems play a crucial role in increasing the flexibility and dispatchability of solar power, enabling renewable energy to be stored and released when needed. By smoothing generation profiles and supporting grid stability, BESS projects are becoming a cornerstone of Germany’s energy transition.
SUNOTEC Germany brings extensive experience in the turnkey realisation and reliable operation of complex energy infrastructure, combining engineering expertise, construction excellence, and integrated BESS capabilities. The collaboration with SEAC Group is built on shared values of technical quality, long-term partnership, and a mutual commitment to accelerating the deployment of future-ready energy systems.
Christian Salzeder, Managing Director of SUNOTEC Germany, commented:
“The SEAC Group has entrusted us with the first phase of construction for this ambitious programme, marking an important milestone for SUNOTEC Germany in the large-scale battery storage segment. Battery storage is a key enabler for a resilient and flexible energy system, and this partnership demonstrates how experienced industry players can jointly deliver solutions that support the long-term success of renewable energy.”
BESS as a Strategic Pillar within the SUNOTEC Group
Battery Energy Storage Systems have become a core strategic pillar within the SUNOTEC Group's integrated energy platform. Building on years of experience in the development, construction and operation of large-scale solar, SUNOTEC has systematically expanded its BESS capabilities across development, engineering, construction, and long-term operations.
SUNOTEC acts as the largest developer and operator of battery energy storage systems in Bulgaria, with a growing portfolio of utility-scale projects that play a key role in grid stabilisation and renewable integration. This market-leading position has enabled the group to develop deep technical expertise, proven delivery models, and robust operational know-how across the full BESS lifecycle. The expansion of BESS activities in Germany represents a natural next step in SUNOTEC’s European growth strategy. Germany’s energy market, characterised by high renewable penetration, increasing price volatility, and growing grid constraints, offers significant potential for large-scale storage solutions. By transferring its experience from other European markets, SUNOTEC is well-positioned to support the German energy system with bankable battery storage infrastructure. Projects such as the collaboration with SEAC Group underscore SUNOTEC’s ambition to actively shape the next phase of the energy transition in Germany, moving beyond pure generation towards fully integrated, system-relevant energy solutions.
